What is Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. Using appliances such as braces, clear aligners, and other devices, orthodontists guide teeth into their proper positions — improving not just the appearance of your smile, but the overall function of your bite.
The goal of orthodontic treatment goes well beyond straight teeth. A properly aligned bite makes it easier to speak clearly, chew comfortably, and maintain good oral hygiene — reducing your long-term risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw disorders.
At Cranston Orthodontics, Dr. Cosmo brings over 27 years of experience and board-certified expertise to every patient — from young children receiving early evaluations to adults finally addressing issues they've lived with for years.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works
- Consultation and records: Dr. Cosmo conducts a thorough clinical examination and takes diagnostic records — including X-rays, photographs, and digital impressions. These form the foundation of your personalized treatment plan.
- Active treatment with appliances: Based on your needs and goals, Dr. Cosmo will recommend the right appliance — whether metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, Invisalign, or a combination approach — to guide your teeth into alignment.
- Regular adjustment appointments: You'll visit every four to eight weeks so Dr. Cosmo can monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments. Appointments are typically brief and straightforward.
- Retention: Once teeth have moved into their final positions, a retainer holds them in place while the surrounding bone stabilizes. Wearing your retainer as directed is what keeps your results permanent.
